RECAP: Philly Loves Local Music Day

Market East at North Star Bar

On Thursday night the trio, Market East played at North Star Bar.

Lucy Stone, The Deli’s featured artist this past month played right before. The Drexel student’s infectious voice carried through the room, singing covers from Florence and The Machine to Young the Giant, as well as some of her originals like “Out of Time”.

While Market East was doing their sound check, the wide open space started to get a bit more crowded. As they began to play, the audience weened in more and more, interested and intrigued by a different type of sound.Their music is one that you don’t hear as often these days, making use of only a tom, guitar, jingle bells, and the perfect combination of vocals. Someone even compared them to the Beach Boys. With a friendly feel, doo-woppy melodies and romantic lyrics; these guys are sure to woo you with just one harmony. Their set included songs from the self-titled EP, like Mariella, Genevieve, and the fun, shoe-tapping, Elena. And besides their released songs, they played a new song entitled “Old Love” which will be showcased on their next release.

“The first EP was sort of lower-fi, but we did that on purpose. This one will showcase our voices more.” said member Max Perla. And Vincent John followed his statement saying, “The core is harmony and melodies, we embellish the vocals by way of harmony. This time around we’re going to produce it with more high fidelity than a garage feel” The best part about these guys is that there is no lead singer, so the triangle formation is not in effect. Straight line and straightforward. Their new EP is in the works and is due in late summer/early fall so for now performing is on pause. “Max actually got laid off from Septa”, joked Vincent. Let’s hope they aren’t threatened by the band’s name.
